The Common Yoga Protocol (CYP)

The Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) is a standardized set of yoga practices established to make Yoga accessible and to promote its widespread adoption, especially during events like the International Day of Yoga (IDY).

Here's a general overview of the CYP:

Purpose

  • To provide a simple, cost-effective way to promote health and wellbeing through yoga practice.
  • To encourage mass participation in yoga, reinforcing its role in fostering a healthier global community.

Structure

  • The CYP generally involves a structured 45-minute routine, often followed by additional activities, such as lectures or prayers.
  • It encompasses a sequence of practices designed to provide a well-rounded introduction to yoga and its benefits.

Key elements often included

  • Prayer/Invocation: To create a positive and relaxed atmosphere at the beginning of the practice.
  • Loosening Practices (Cālana Kriyas/Yogic Suksma Vyāyāmas): Gentle movements to prepare the body and increase microcirculation, often performed standing or sitting.
  • Yogāsanas (Yoga Postures): A series of poses practiced with awareness of body and breath, including standing, sitting, prone, and supine positions.
  • Prānāyāma (Breathing Practices): Developing awareness and control of breath, including regulated inhalation and exhalation.
  • Dhyāna (Meditation): Focussed attention and contemplation to promote relaxation and inner peace.
  • Ending with Meditation/Deep Silence/Śhānti Paṭha: To integrate the benefits of the practice and promote a sense of calm.

Important guidelines

  • Practice in a calm and quiet environment with a relaxed body and mind.
  • Practice on an empty or light stomach.
  • Wear light and comfortable cotton clothing.
  • Avoid practicing in conditions of exhaustion, illness, or acute stress.
  • Consult a physician or Yoga therapist if you have chronic diseases, pain, or cardiac problems before starting.
  • Pregnant women and those menstruating should consult experts before performing Yogic practices.
  • Practice slowly, mindfully, and within your capacity.
  • Breathe through your nostrils unless otherwise instructed.
  • Do not hold your breath unless specifically instructed.
  • Maintain a vegetarian diet as recommended.
  • Wait 20-30 minutes after practice before bathing or eating.

Benefits of the CYP

  • Improved physical fitness and musculoskeletal functioning.
  • Enhanced cardiovascular health.
  • Helpful in managing various lifestyle-related disorders, including diabetes, respiratory disorders, and hypertension.
  • Reduces depression, fatigue, anxiety, and stress.
  • Regulates menstrual and menopausal symptoms.
  • Fosters mind-body coordination, emotional equanimity, and intellectual clarity.

In essence, the Common Yoga Protocol provides a framework for regular Yoga practice that can lead to a healthier and more fulfilling life
